Generative engine optimization (GEO)
Definition of GEO, the practice of making a site citable by generative AI systems, and how it relates to AEO and SEO.
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of making a website's content easy for generative AI systems to retrieve, ground on, and cite when they compose an answer. It extends AEO: where AEO supplies the single answer, GEO supplies the trustworthy source a synthesized answer can reference.
Practices
- Publish reference content with stable URLs, clear titles, and a one-sentence description a retrieval system can rank on.
- Serve a plain markdown representation of each page, so an agent can read it without parsing HTML.
- Advertise the site to agents through well-known discovery documents (API catalog, MCP server card, agent skills).
- Keep the human page and the machine representation in agreement. If they disagree, the discovery layer is worse than useless.
